Department of Public Safety Divisions

The mission of the Capitol Police Division is to provide for the safety of persons on state property and to protect state facilities and assets.

Emergency Management coordinate efforts to protect lives and property; to prevent, respond to, recover from and mitigate all threats, hazards and emergencies.

The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security (OHS) acts as the Cabinet-level State office for the prevention of and preparation for a potential terrorist event. Nevada OHS directs and coordinates a comprehensive counter terrorism and “all threats-all hazards” approach in its prevention, preparedness and response strategies.

The Mission of the Records, Communications and Compliance Division is to provide accurate, timely, and appropriate public safety information to the Divisions within the Department, to the law enforcement community and to the citizens of Nevada using state-of-the-art technology.

The Nevada Highway Patrol's (NHP) mission is to promote safety on Nevada Highways by providing law enforcement traffic services to the motoring public.

To provide the citizens of Nevada with an innovative, proactive and efficient approach for the investigation of criminal activity statewide; to provide law enforcement with a purposeful collection, analysis and sharing of intelligence-based information; and to provide members of the Investigation Division with a challenging and rewarding work environment.

It is the philosophy and practice of this Division that each offender is responsible for his or her behavior and for the choices they make each day.

There are units in the Division that are tasked with the supervision of sex offenders, house arrest offenders, hardcore gang members, mandatory release parolees, drug court and mental health court, interstate compact offenders as well as general supervision offenders. The Division also has a training component dedicated to the training and professional growth of new officers through the use of field training officers

The mission of the State Fire Marshal is to protect life, property and the environment from fires and hazardous materials in the State of Nevada.

The State Fire Marshal Division's mission accomplished by development and application of fire prevention education, fire service training, fire protection engineering, licensing/permitting and investigative/enforcement services delivered directly or in coordination with the public safety community.

The mission of the Department of Public Safety Training Division is to facilitate progressive, effective training in basic law enforcement, continuing education, career growth and development of the Department of Public Safety employees, utilizing professional and ethical methodology.

The Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Criminal Justice Assistance (OCJA), administers grant funds to state and local units of government and Native American tribes performing law enforcement functions for programs to improve the criminal justice system involving usage and sales of controlled substances and associated violent crimes, faith-based and not-for-profit agencies providing drug treatment programs, corrections and prevention and education programs, prosecution and court programs.

It is the mission of the State Administrative Agency to reduce violent crime and substance abuse in Nevada by extending support to law enforcement agencies throughout the state.

It is essential that all allegations of peace officer misconduct be thoroughly and objectively investigated to assure the public that misconduct will not be tolerated and, at the same time, vindicate officers who have been unjustly accused.  The authority and responsibility of these investigations within the Department of Public Safety are vested in the Divisions Chiefs.  Division Chiefs may defer to Office of Professional Responsibility for investigations involving employees of the Capitol Police, Division of Investigation, Highway Patrol, Parole and Probation, State Fire Marshall and Training Division.
